How to Examine Your Roof for Damage After a Severe Storm

Storm Damage Roof Repair

Summer is storm season, and while we’re in the middle of some of the most tumultuous weather of the year, it’s helpful to know how to identify roof damage after a severe storm. Roof damage is something that most homeowners fear, as it can often lead to costly repairs or replacement. However, not every instance of storm damage is catastrophic. In fact, much of the damage your roof may incur during a storm isn’t something that’s seen as easily as something like an enormous branch that has punctured your roof. Rather, storms often cause much smaller damage that may not easily noticed at the time, but can lead to expensive roof repair if left untreated. As such, inspecting your roof for damage after a storm can allow you to make easy, inexpensive repairs before the affected area causes further damage.

Begin your examination by standing far away from your home to get the biggest view of your roof as a whole. This will help you see if there is, in fact, serious damage that needs emergency repair. If you don’t see any glaring damage from afar, then you can move in closer for a more detailed examination.

Next, take a walk around your perimeter with your eyes pointed toward the ground to identify any shingles that may have blown off during the storm. Even one missing shingle can cause a chain reaction of damage down the road, so you should make a call for repair if you see shingles or shingle fragments that have fallen to the ground.

After that, climb onto a ladder (if you’re able) to check your gutters for additional shingles or shingle granules. While you’re on the ladder, you should also keep an eye out for split seams, dented shingles, and dents in the gutters or flashing.

After performing an outdoor check, examine your home’s interior for signs of damage. You can do this by checking ceilings for leaks, but if you can access your attic, you’ll be able to see the signs of damage more easily.

If your examination uncovers evidence of damage, then it’s time to make a call to the professionals, as roof repair can be very dangerous for a novice to attempt.
